Maps

The maps on club and court pages are pictures we generate and store ourselves, not a live embed from Google or anyone else. Nothing loads from a third party when you view one. The link beside a map, labelled Open in Google Maps, is an ordinary link: it only contacts Google if you choose to click it, and it opens in a new tab when you do.

Looking up a postcode, and where it goes

On the London page you can type a postcode, or share your location, to put the nearest boroughs at the top of the list. On a borough page the same box puts that borough’s clubs and public courts in order of distance from you. Both are optional. Neither happens unless you ask for it, and every page is complete without either.

Your postcode goes to our own server and nowhere else. Our server asks a postcode lookup service, postcodes.io, which is built on Ordnance Survey and Office for National Statistics open data, and it sends back a pair of coordinates. Your browser never contacts that service, so that service never learns your address, your IP address, or that you are the one asking. That is the whole reason the lookup goes through us rather than straight from your browser.

We do not write your postcode to a database, a file, or a log. Our server keeps a short list of coordinates in memory so the same postcode is not looked up twice in a row. That list is capped in size, it is keyed by a one-way digest rather than by the postcode itself, and it is gone the moment the server restarts. To stop the lookup being abused we also count requests per connection for up to a minute, again against a one-way digest rather than the address itself.

If you share your location instead, we ask your device for a deliberately coarse fix: a borough is kilometres across, so pinpoint accuracy would cost battery and tell us far more about you than the job needs. It is used in the page you are looking at, it is never sent to us or to anyone else, and it is gone when you close the tab.

Nothing about either action is counted, measured or reported anywhere, and neither of them puts anything in your browser. Separately from this feature, our hosting provider records the IP address of every request as part of running any website; that is covered in the privacy policy rather than here.

What we do not do

No analytics, no tag manager, no advertising pixels, no social media embeds, no session recording, no A/B testing tools, and no cookies set by us on any of our own domains. If that changes, this page changes with it and you will be told before it happens rather than after.
