Tennis in Croydon
No clubs on Courting here yet, and fourteen public court venues across the borough.
Croydon has more park tennis sites than any other borough in south London: fourteen of them, from Purley Beeches and Coulsdon Memorial Ground in the far south up to Upper Norwood and South Norwood in the north. The council and the LTA put around £600,000 into rebuilding them, and Better runs the lot at £5 a session, with an access code sent when you book.
Fourteen sites is a lot of court and it still leaves the harder half untouched, which is finding three other people who can play at the same time and who make the match worth playing. Courting is what Croydon clubs use for that: it takes the booking, composes doubles that stay even, and keeps a club night rotating so nobody spends it on the bench.

Tennis in Croydon: common questions
- How much does it cost to play tennis in a Croydon park?
- £5 a session, the same at all fourteen sites, booked in advance through the Croydon Parks Tennis pages. Better, which is GLL, runs the courts for the council and sends you an access code with the booking. Free Barclays Free Park Tennis sessions also run on Tuesdays, Thursdays and at weekends.
- Which Croydon park has the most tennis courts?
- Trumble Gardens in Thornton Heath, with five, followed by Addiscombe Recreation Ground with four. Biggin Wood Park, Coulsdon Memorial Ground and Park Hill Recreation Ground have three each. Several of the fourteen sites, including Wandle Park and Rickman Hill, have a single court.
- What surface are Croydon's park tennis courts?
- A near-even split, which is unusual. The operator's booking sheets put seven of the fourteen sites on acrylic and seven on tarmac, so it is worth checking which you are booking if you have a preference. None of the fourteen is floodlit.
