Tennis in Hackney
No clubs on Courting here yet, and nine public court venues across the borough.
Hackney runs its park tennis on two tracks. Hackney Tennis looks after most of it, nine sites in all: Clissold Park and Hackney Downs are the big ones at twelve tarmac courts between them, with smaller porous macadam courts at Millfields, Spring Hill, London Fields, Joe White Gardens and Springfield Park. Better handles the rest, three macadam courts at Haggerston Park and two more on the roof at Britannia Leisure Centre.
So court time is not what Hackney is short of. The game itself is the awkward part: four players, the same evening, sides that stay even once you start. Courting is where Hackney clubs run both halves of that, the booking and the play. It fills doubles fairly, keeps the queue turning over on a club night, and offers you games on the evenings you have marked yourself free.

Tennis in Hackney: common questions
- Which tennis courts in Hackney are free to book?
- Clissold Park and Hackney Downs are both free, run by Hackney Tennis and booked through their ClubSpark pages. Clissold Park has eight tarmac courts and Hackney Downs has four. Springfield Park is free too but works differently: the operator states there is no booking system there at all, so its five porous macadam courts are turn up and play. The two Better sites, Haggerston Park and Britannia Leisure Centre, are paid.
- Are there rooftop tennis courts in Hackney?
- Yes. Britannia Leisure Centre has two hard courts on its roof, run by Better, and Shoreditch Park court bookings go through the same centre. The other Better site, Haggerston Park, has three macadam courts on a multi-use games area.
- Can you play tennis in Hackney after dark?
- Some courts carry lighting and some do not. The operator's own court listings show lighting on six of the eight at Clissold Park and on two of the four at Hackney Downs, with the rest listed without it, so check the booking page for the slot you want.
