Tennis in Tower Hamlets
No clubs on Courting here yet, and seven public court venues across the borough.
Tower Hamlets contracts its park tennis to a non-profit, Tower Hamlets Tennis, and the result is unusually consistent. Seven parks, every court porous macadam, and one price list across all of them: £4 an hour off peak and £6 at peak, with £2 off for under-18s and senior citizens. Victoria Park, Bethnal Green Gardens and King Edward Memorial Park have four courts each, and Wapping Gardens has a single one.
One price list does not solve the thing that actually keeps people off court, which is not knowing who they will be playing. Courting handles that for clubs in the borough: it books the court, forms doubles that hold together for a whole set rather than falling apart in the first two games, and keeps a club night moving instead of stalling around one long match.

Tennis in Tower Hamlets: common questions
- How much does it cost to play tennis in a Tower Hamlets park?
- £4 an hour off peak and £6 at peak, the same at all seven parks, with a £2 discount for under-18s and senior citizens. Tower Hamlets Tennis, the non-profit contracted by the council, runs the booking and courts open about seven days in advance.
- Which Tower Hamlets tennis courts have floodlights?
- Two of the seven: Bethnal Green Gardens on Malcolm Place and St John's Park on Plevna Street. The operator lists the other five, Victoria Park, King Edward Memorial Park, Poplar Recreation Ground, Ropemakers Fields and Wapping Gardens, as daylight hours only, so a winter evening game means one of the first two.
- Where are the tennis courts in Victoria Park?
- By St Mark's Gate at the eastern end of the park, E9 5DY. There are four porous macadam courts there, booked through Tower Hamlets Tennis like the rest of the borough's parks, and they are daylight hours rather than floodlit.
