Waltham Forest concentrates its tennis in five parks and put real money into them: the council counts eighteen high quality courts and four mini courts across the borough after refurbishment. Ridgeway Park in Chingford is the flagship, described by its operator as six floodlit outdoor courts plus two mini ones, with Abbotts Park, Chingford Memorial Park, Lloyd and Aveling Park and Higham Hill Park making up the rest.
Membership at £45 a year makes every one of those courts free to book, which removes the cost of playing but not the difficulty of arranging it. Courting is the other half: it takes the booking, composes doubles that hold together for a whole set, and puts games in front of members on the evenings they have marked themselves free, rather than leaving it to a thread nobody reads in time.
